17 On January 12th 1855, The Chesterton Ballast pits are mentioned as a place to skate, in Romilly’s Cambridge Diary, (1848-1864) and were called Great Ballast Hole and Little Ballast Hole, lying near the railway. There are many botanical records from both before and after the First World War and until the 1950s from Chesterton Ballast Pits (on the Eeastside of the railway to Ely): In the 1940’s Chesterton Railway Sidings, lying west of the railway line (to Ely) was famous chiefly for bird records. In more recent times the area has become known botanically and 400 species have been recorded since the sidings were more or less abandoned c. 1998. The site lies in the parish of Milton (detached). see OS 6" map, 1904, and for a history of the site see articles by Graham Easy and Henry Tribe in Nat. in Cambs, 43:7-12 (2001).

18 This is the single Meadow and a Trust reserve: the New meadows are a complex of meadows nearby of wild life interest but not a Reserve.
